Cervical Cancer Screening

Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable cancers—when detected early. At Dixit Hospital and Harshai IVF Centre, we offer safe, accurate, and evidence-based cervical cancer screening services, including Pap smear tests and HPV testing.

We strongly believe in early detection and awareness as the most effective tools to protect women’s health. Our expert gynecologists provide comfortable and confidential screenings, backed by compassionate care and clear guidance.

Why Cervical Cancer Screening is Important

Cervical cancer usually develops slowly over time. It begins with abnormal cell changes in the cervix, which can be detected years before they turn cancerous.

Regular screening can:

  • Detect precancerous changes early

  • Prevent cervical cancer from developing

  • Diagnose early-stage cancer when it’s highly treatable

  • Offer peace of mind through preventive care

With regular Pap smears and HPV tests, you can take control of your reproductive health and stay ahead of any risks.

What is a Pap Smear?

A Pap smear (or Pap test) is a simple procedure where a sample of cells is collected from the cervix to detect any abnormal or precancerous changes.

  • Quick and painless (may cause mild discomfort)

  • Performed during a routine gynecology exam

  • Ideal for women aged 21 to 65

  • Recommended every 3 years or as advised by your doctor

If abnormal cells are detected, we may advise further testing or monitoring, depending on the severity.

What is the HPV Test?

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common cause of cervical cancer. An HPV test checks for the presence of high-risk HPV strains that can lead to cervical cancer.

  • Often done along with a Pap smear (co-testing)

  • Recommended for women aged 30 and above

  • Can be done every 5 years if results are normal

  • A positive test does not mean cancer—it just indicates closer monitoring is needed

Together, the Pap and HPV tests form a powerful preventive strategy.

When Should You Get Screened?

Here are general guidelines for cervical cancer screening:

  • Ages 21–29: Pap smear every 3 years

  • Ages 30–65: Pap smear + HPV co-testing every 5 years (or Pap smear alone every 3 years)

  • After 65: May stop testing if past results were consistently normal

  • Post-menopausal women: Screening still advised based on health history

  • Vaccinated women: HPV vaccination doesn’t eliminate the need for screening

Women with a history of abnormal results, weakened immune systems, or exposure to DES (Diethylstilbestrol) may need more frequent testing.

What to Expect During the Test

The Pap and HPV tests are done during a pelvic exam, which usually takes less than 10 minutes.

Steps:

  • You lie down comfortably on the exam table

  • A speculum is gently inserted to view the cervix

  • A soft brush or swab collects cervical cells

  • Samples are sent to the lab for analysis

There is no downtime, and you can resume normal activities immediately.

Addressing Common Fears & Myths

“It will hurt.”
The test may cause slight pressure but is generally not painful.

“I feel embarrassed.”
Our female gynecologists ensure complete privacy, comfort, and respect.

“I’m healthy—I don’t need screening.”
Cervical cancer may have no symptoms in early stages. That’s why regular screening is critical, even without any discomfort.

“I had the HPV vaccine, so I’m safe.”
The vaccine reduces the risk but doesn’t eliminate it. Screening is still essential.
